Tadaaki Otaka leads the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in these two lyrical orchestral masterworks by César Franck, recorded in 1995. Psyché is a four-part symphonic poem that follows the mythological tale with Franck's characteristic harmonic richness and emotional depth. Le Chasseur Maudit is darker and more turbulent, showcasing the composer's dramatic flair. Otaka brings clarity and warmth to these sometimes dense orchestrations, allowing beautiful melodic lines to shine through. The choral singing is excellent and the orchestral playing responsive and engaged. These are not Franck's most famous works, but they contain some of his most inspired musical moments. A deeply rewarding listening experience for anyone devoted to Romantic music.
