Symphony No. 3 / Concerto For Orchestra
Two early 20th-century masters on one disc: Franz Schmidt's sweeping Third Symphony and Paul Hindemith's more angular, modernist Concerto for Orchestra. The Chicago Symphony under Neeme Järvi takes on both works with assurance in this excellent 1991 Chandos recording. Schmidt's world is richly harmonic and emotionally direct; Hindemith, writing after the First World War, carved a tougher, more intellectual path. Together they represent two responses to how classical music could evolve beyond pure Romanticism. This remains the standard modern recording and offers an excellent survey of this fascinating period.
