Jerry Garcia Band

Jerry Garcia is best known as the guitarist of The Grateful Dead, but his side project offered something different—more soulful, more groove-focused, less endlessly exploratory. Formed in the late 1970s with keyboardist Melvin Seals and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the Jerry Garcia Band explored RandB, soul, and funk as much as rock. This 1991 self-titled album captures them in fine form, with guests adding color to the core group's tight interplay. Garcia's guitar tone is warm and singing, never overstaying its welcome. The rhythms lock in tight, the songs have hooks, and everything feels like musicians genuinely enjoying playing together. There's space for spontaneity without indulgence. If you think of the Grateful Dead as endlessly spacey, this might surprise you—it's a record that swings.
