Enrico Mainardi was one of the twentieth century's greatest cellists, and his interpretations of Bach's solo suites set the standard for generations. This 1961 recording of Suite No. 5 in C minor captures his mature artistry—unfussy, deeply musical playing that lets Bach's architecture breathe. Mainardi favors a singing tone and thoughtful phrasing over technical display, finding the work's lyrical heart without romanticizing it. The C minor suite contains some of Bach's most introspective writing, full of dance forms that mask profound harmonic language. Vintage Archiv Produktion recordings like this are sought after for good reason; the sound remains remarkably vivid. If you've only encountered Bach cello suites in more recent recordings, Mainardi's approach offers illuminating perspective from a player who knew the instrument's history intimately.
