Kyrill Kondrashin
Kirill Kondrashin was a legendary Soviet conductor known for his deep interpretations of Russian music. This 1998 recording showcases twentieth-century Russian masters through his conducting of the Moscow Philharmonic. The centerpiece is Alexander Scriabin's Universe Mysterium: Prefatory Act, an unfinished visionary work of extraordinary ambition. Scriabin reimagined music as spiritual experience, employing mystical harmonic language and elaborate orchestral color to evoke transcendence. The work is massive in scope and considerable in difficulty. Alongside sits Khachaturian's Piano Concerto in D-Flat Major, a brilliant showpiece for pianist Yakov Flier. This concerto balances dramatic grandeur with lyrical warmth, showcasing both soloist and orchestra. The USSR State Academic Chorus adds further color to this ambitious program. Kondrashin's interpretations are weighty and thoughtful, never rushing toward easy effect. An essential disc for serious classical listeners.
