Arnett Cobb, the tenor saxophonist whose breathy, soulful tone became synonymous with Houston's RandB-inflected jazz scene of the 1950s, brought his distinctive voice to this 1983 session captured live in the Netherlands. Joined by pianist Rein De Graaff, bassist Jacques Schols, and drummer John Engels, Cobb navigates a beautifully balanced repertoire—from bebop standards like "I Got Rhythm" and "Body and Soul" to the spiritual depths of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." What emerges is a portrait of an elder statesman still burning with creative fire, his tone warm and woody even as his phrasing carries the weight of decades spent in jazz's service. This Timeless recording lets you hear Cobb not as a historical figure, but as a living, breathing musician in conversation with attentive European colleagues, trading ideas across these deceptively simple melodies.
