Suite Fur Violoncello Und Klavier A-moll (Arpeggione)
Enrico Mainardi was one of the 20th century's great cellists, and this 1964 Deutsche Grammophon recording preserves a particularly intimate reading of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata in A minor with pianist Guido A. Borciani. The arpeggione was a short-lived instrument—a hybrid of guitar and cello—and Schubert's only composition for it remains luminous: lyrical, bittersweet, deeply romantic. Mainardi's tone is full and singing, every phrase shaped with care. Borciani matches that sensitivity, and together they create an interpretation of genuine warmth and sophistication. This is chamber music at its finest: two musicians conversing intimately across Schubert's immortal melodic gift. The original pressing has become increasingly sought after by serious cellists and classical collectors alike.
