The Joy Of Sax

Sonny Criss's alto saxophone had always swung with bebop refinement, but by 1977, the Los Angeles master was ready to meet his moment head-on with *The Joy of Sax*. This ABC Impulse! session captures Criss in a remarkably expansive mood, weaving his bright, singing tone through a collection of soul standards and originals with a funk undertow that never compromises his harmonic sophistication. Whether gliding over a groovy arrangement of "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" or bringing tenderness to "You Are So Beautiful," Criss proves that jazz-funk didn't mean abandoning taste—it meant deepening connection. There's a warmth here, a conversational ease in his playing, as if he's finally found the perfect setting to let his instrument do all the talking. The record breathes with the spirit of its title: not virtuosity for its own sake, but the genuine pleasure of making music that moves.
