Thijs van Leer's Ayreon project has spent decades crafting intricate prog-metal narratives that blur the line between theatrical ambition and genuine musical substance, and this 2022 reissue of the Universal Migrator duology represents some of his most expansive work. Originally released across two albums, these pieces sprawl across time and consciousness—moving between Mars colonies, historical moments reframed as science fiction, and cyclical dreamscapes anchored by the recurring "Dream Sequencer" motif. Van Leer assembles the full instrumental and vocal forces that define his sound: soaring melodies, layered keyboards, and progressive structures that take their time unfolding. There's an almost conceptual-rock grandeur here, reminiscent of 1970s ambition but filtered through modern metal and electronic textures.
