Frank Lowe's tenor saxophone has long thrived in the margins where free jazz meets the blues—a terrain he's explored since the 1970s with uncompromising intensity. *Vision Blue* finds him in 1997 with bassist Mal Waldron and drummer Elvin Jones, two figures equally committed to breaking down jazz's formal walls while keeping its emotional core intact. What emerges across these twelve pieces is a conversation that feels both exploratory and rooted: Lowe's gruff, searching tone moves through modal meditations and bebop-inflected passages, sometimes lyrical, sometimes abrasive, always purposeful. The trio moves fluidly between standards like "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" and original compositions that feel like extensions of that same jazz vocabulary, reimagined through a free perspective. This is mature, unfussy free jazz—no gimmicks, just musicians listening to each other with decades of experience informing each choice.
