Billy Gibbons is best known as the visionary guitarist of ZZ Top, but Hardware strips away the theatrics and distills his first love: Texas blues. This 2021 Concord Records release finds him returning to his roots with a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to blues guitar and songwriting. His tone is instantly recognizable—thick, expressive, steeped in the language of Albert King and Muddy Waters—but deployed here with characteristic restraint. The album feels like dropping into a honky-tonk where a master is playing exactly what he wants to play, without compromise. Essential for blues enthusiasts and anyone curious about what drives one of rock's greatest guitar players.
