Piano Sonatas 1, 2 & 3
Erich Wolfgang Korngold was an Austrian composer known for his lush Hollywood film scores, but these piano sonatas reveal his deeper identity as a concert composer. Written across his lifetime, the three sonatas are richly romantic and architecturally ambitious—far more than parlor pieces. They flow between introspective passages and occasional virtuosic flights, rooted in late-19th-century European tradition. Matthijs Verschoor's 1986 recording captures the warm, lyrical character beautifully. These works have been criminally under-recorded; this is a genuine discovery if you appreciate romantic piano music with real substance.
