Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé were two of France's greatest sacred music composers. Fauré's Requiem is a masterpiece of late 19th-century choral music, known for its gentle, contemplative approach to the Latin mass for the dead. Duruflé's Requiem, composed in the 20th century, draws inspiration from Fauré while creating its own distinctive voice. This 1991 recording features The New College Oxford Choir, one of England's finest collegiate choirs, joined by the ensemble Capricorn under the direction of Edward Higginbottom. The acoustics of New College Chapel provide an ideal setting for these reverential works. Both requiems are beautifully contrasted here, showing how two great French composers approached the same sacred text with different sensibilities. Essential listening for admirers of sacred choral music.
