Frank Möbus and Der Rote Bereich step into the freer territories of jazz, where melody and structure become suggestions rather than laws. Working with ACT Records, a label with deep roots in German jazz innovation, Möbus crafts a sound that's exploratory without abandoning musicality. Free jazz can be impenetrable or liberating depending on the musicians involved, and here it's genuinely the latter. There's a kind of organized chaos happening—players listening, responding, building ideas collectively. The saxophones cut through with authority, the rhythm section maintains enough anchor to keep you oriented while still embracing the music's unpredictability. This isn't background music; it's music that insists you pay attention. If you've always been curious about free jazz but unsure where to start, Möbus offers a compelling middle ground: experimental but never alienating, free but never formless.
