Tullio Serafin's conducting is authoritative and theatrical, pushing the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala to brilliant playing. Callas's interpretation of Gilda remains unmatched for its purity, technical brilliance, and emotional directness. Gobbi's Rigoletto is devastating in its humanity.
