Soul Jazz Records digs deep into Jamaica's funk underground with this collection of 45s that capture a fascinating crossroads in the island's music—when soul and funk sensibilities began threading through reggae and roots sounds in the late sixties and seventies. These tracks represent a slice of Jamaican record culture that rarely made it beyond Kingston's sound systems and local radio, where international influences collided with homegrown rhythms to create something distinctly hybrid. The funkiness here sits alongside conscious lyrics and rootsy production, painting a picture of an era when Jamaica's musicians were absorbing Stax and Motown while maintaining their own sonic identity. This is the Jamaica that tourists and even many reggae collectors never hear—raw, soulful, and utterly human in its concerns.
