Mainardi's 1956 recording of Suite No. 6 in D major captures the cellist at the height of his powers, offering a warm yet architecturally clear interpretation of Bach's most virtuosic solo work. The D major suite sits at the summit of the cycle—brilliant, optimistic, with wide-ranging passagework that demands both technical command and artistic vision. Mainardi brings it all: his tone is gorgeous without being self-indulgent, his runs are clean and purposeful, his phrasing follows the music's internal logic. This vintage Archiv pressing remains a classic against which modern performances are still measured. The recording quality is excellent for its era, capturing the full resonance of the cello. Original pressings of these Mainardi Bach recordings have become increasingly scarce, making this an important piece of cello discography.
