La Navarraise
Jules Massenet was a prolific French opera composer of the late 19th century, known for operas that balance theatrical drama with beautiful melody. La Navarraise is a relatively short opera in two acts set during the Carlist Wars in Spain, featuring passionate characters and stirring orchestration. This 1998 recording is a star vehicle, with the legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne in the title role and Placido Domingo as her romantic counterpart. Conductor Henry Lewis leads a performance that captures both the opera's dramatic intensity and its romantic lyricism. The supporting cast, including baritone Sherrill Milnes, provides excellent depth. While less frequently performed than Massenet's Manon or Werther, La Navarraise deserves rediscovery for its compelling story and memorable music. A fine recording of a neglected masterpiece.
