Nikos Skalkottas spent years in Berlin studying under Schoenberg, absorbing the twelve-tone method and modernist rigour before returning to Athens, where he'd remain largely obscure until after his death. This collection traces that journey through his solo piano works, from the graceful Griechische Suite of 1924—still finding its footing between tradition and innovation—through to the more structurally adventurous suites of the early 1940s. The piano writing here balances Skalkottas's European training with an increasingly personal idiom; the delightful Dance Suite of The Gnomes reveals a playful side often overshadowed by his more serious output. These aren't flashy virtuoso vehicles but thoughtful, often introspective pieces where clarity and craft matter more than effect. Pianist Håkon Austbø brings the right temperament to this music—patient, intelligent, unhurried—allowing the harmonic subtleties and structural logic to unfold naturally.
