Pianist Clifford Curzon, accompanied by conductor Rafael Kubelik and the Symphonie-Orchester Des Bayerischen Rundfunks, recorded these two late Mozart piano concertos for Audite. The A major concerto KV 488 is luminous and graceful, showcasing Mozart's gift for memorable melody. The B flat major concerto KV 595, Mozart's final essay in the form, carries an autumnal character despite apparent lightness - a farewell tinged with melancholy. Curzon balances the solo keyboard with orchestral voices thoughtfully, avoiding preciosity. This pairing illuminates two distinct faces of Mozart's keyboard writing, separated by five years but both masterpieces. Excellent sound engineering enhances the appeal.
