Andy Kirk led one of the most swinging big bands of the early Thirties, based out of Kansas City. This Classics reissue documents Kirk's orchestra from 1929-1931, capturing the ensemble during its formation and early rise. The band had an infectious bounce and tight ensemble playing despite primitive recording technology of the era. With arrangements balancing head arrangements and written scores, Kirk's orchestra maintained a loose, dancing quality. You'll hear early versions of tunes that would become standards, showcasing a less-famous but deeply capable chapter of early swing. A genuine piece of jazz history from the pre-electrical recording era.
