Boccherini's symphonies inhabit an elegant middle ground between the galant charm of early Haydn and the darker, more introspective moods that would define the later Classical era. These works from his Op. 37 and Op. 41 cycles showcase his gift for orchestral color and formal sophistication—the D minor symphony opens with genuine dramatic weight, while the A major offers that graceful lyricism for which he remains beloved. The C minor symphony sits somewhere between passion and restraint, characteristic of Boccherini's refusal to indulge mere sentimentality. Johannes Goritzki and the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss bring period-informed clarity to these scores, allowing the woodwind writing and subtle harmonic shifts to breathe naturally. This volume captures an often-overlooked facet of the composer: not merely the courtly entertainer, but a serious symphonist wrestling with form and feeling.
