Sister Shirley Sydnor brings decades of lived spiritual conviction to these twelve traditional and original gospel compositions, accompanied by Erik Trauner's sympathetic arrangements that honor both the soul-deep blues roots and the pure devotional heart of the material. Recorded in 1998, *I'll Fly Away* moves through the familiar hymnic territory—"I Want Jesus To Walk With Me," "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah"—with an unshowy authenticity that refuses sentimentality, her voice carrying the weight of genuine belief rather than performance. Trauner's production respects the intimacy of these songs, letting the interplay between voice and arrangement breathe naturally, whether in sparse, blues-inflected moments or fuller passages where funk and soul undertones gently surface. This is gospel as conversation with the sacred, rooted in the African American traditions that birthed both blues and spirituality, rendered here with the kind of unhurried grace that rewards close listening.
