Jordi Savall and his ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya approach the musical world of Charles V through a remarkably intimate lens with this 2016 release, assembling chansons, villancicos, and instrumental dances from the sixteenth-century courts that surrounded the Holy Roman Emperor. Rather than grand ceremonial music, these pieces reveal the more private musical life of the Renaissance—songs of love, fortune, and courtly wit that circulated among the nobility across France, Spain, and Italy. Savall's scholarship here feels unforced; the ensemble moves naturally through Josquin-era polyphony and Spanish villancicos with the ease of musicians who understand these works not as museum pieces but as living repertory. The interplay between voices and period instruments captures something both refined and genuinely human about Renaissance court life, where "Mille Regretz" and its companion pieces offered solace and entertainment to one of Europe's most powerful rulers.
