Les Abencerages
Cherubini was an Italian composer active in the late 18th and 19th centuries, respected for his sacred music and dramatic operas that influenced Beethoven himself. Les Abencerages, a grand opera originally composed in 1813, tells of Spanish-Moorish romance and political intrigue during the Reconquista. This 2006 Arts Archives release features the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma della RAI and the Coro di Milano della RAI under conductor Peter Maag, delivering a complete performance of this underperformed masterwork. The score combines elaborate orchestration with dramatic vocal writing, showcasing Cherubini's melodic gift and sophisticated harmonic language. Rarely heard today, this opera represents an important link between Classical and Romantic opera. An essential discovery for opera lovers seeking beyond the standard repertoire.
