Mariya Takeuchi's 1984 debut *Variety* captures the sophisticated ease of mid-80s city pop at its most urbane, when Tokyo's pop scene was synthesizing American soul and funk with homegrown melodic sensibility. Her voice—warm, conversational, never overselling emotion—floats across arrangements that drift between late-night ballads and groove-driven funk numbers with the kind of natural confidence that marks a truly gifted interpreter. The album includes "Plastic Love," a track that would eventually soundtrack countless late-night internet journeys decades later, but *Variety* itself deserves attention as a complete statement: nine minutes of "Unforgettable," string-sweetened soul workouts, and pop-rock numbers that show Takeuchi moving comfortably between idioms without ever feeling scattered. This is sophisticated popular music for listening, not background noise—the sound of someone who understood that good songwriting and genuine musicianship never go out of style.
