On The Blue Side

Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff were seasoned soul-jazz veterans by 1990, each having carved their own path through decades of organ-combo grooves and tenor saxophone warmth. This Milestone session captures them in comfortable dialogue—Crawford's breathy, bluesy horn floating above McGriff's soulful Hammond B3, trading ideas on standards and originals that feel lived-in rather than freshly minted. "On the Blue Side" isn't about breaking new ground; it's about two masters who understand soul jazz at its core, trading phrases on "Tuff" and "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" with the ease of old friends who've played these changes a thousand times. There's a hominess here, a sense of joy in the playing that comes from genuine musical kinship. If you've followed either man's catalog or simply love that sweet spot where jazz meets RandB sensibility, this record offers exactly what it promises: good-humored, deeply felt blowing sessions from two musicians who never lost touch with the music's soul.
