Hans Pfitzner stands as one of late German Romanticism's most uncompromising voices, a composer whose fierce commitment to tradition placed him somewhat apart from the early twentieth-century avant-garde movements surrounding him. This collection of orchestral works and concertos—recorded by Werner Andreas Albert with the Münchner Philharmoniker and Bamberger Symphoniker—captures the full sweep of Pfitzner's instrumental imagination, from intimate chamber-scaled symphonies to virtuosic showcase pieces for piano, violin, and cello. His voice remains lyrical and harmonically rich, rooted in the lineage of Brahms and Schumann, yet tinged with a distinctly Austro-German melancholy that runs through even his most extroverted moments. The concertos reveal his gift for writing idiomatically across instruments, while works like the Kleine Sinfonie and Das Fest Auf Solhaug demonstrate his skill at translating literary and philosophical ideas into purely musical language. An essential document for anyone serious about understanding the complete map of German Romanticism.
