Claudio Abbado's time at Decca gave us some of the most lucid, elegantly proportioned orchestral readings of his era—and this collection gathers highlights from those sessions, spanning Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky. Whether conducting the Berlin Philharmonic through Beethoven's Seventh or leading a chamber ensemble in the delicate architecture of the Classical Symphony, Abbado brought an almost chamber-music sensibility to large forces, finding clarity and humanity where bombast might have taken over. The Romantic symphonies here—Scottish, Italian, Brahms's Schicksalslied—reveal his gift for letting melodies breathe without sentimentality, while the twentieth-century works (Stravinsky's Metamorphoses, Prokofiev's Chout) show his fearless modernism. For anyone seeking Abbado's particular blend of textural refinement and emotional directness, this is essential listening.
