Friedrich Gulda was one of the great pianists of the postwar era, equally at home in Bach and bebop, yet his earliest recordings—preserved here from the 1950s—capture something irreplaceable: a young virtuoso discovering his voice through the keyboard masters. This collection spans Bach's Preludes and Fugues with crystalline clarity, Beethoven's lighter miniatures with their characteristic wit, and Chopin's more taxing terrain, where Gulda's touch finds both the Romantic's fire and its quieter introspection. What strikes across these performances is not showiness but conversation—a pianist thinking aloud through each work's architecture, respecting the score while breathing into it with natural phrasing. For anyone curious about Gulda beyond his later explorations into jazz and contemporary music, these recordings reveal the classical foundation and refined sensibility that would define his restless, searching career.
