Zelmira
Rossini's Zelmira is one of his last operas, and this 1990 Erato recording captures it with a stellar cast including soprano Cecilia Gasdia and tenor Chris Merritt. Conducted by Claudio Scimone with I Solisti Veneti, the performance brings clarity and elegance to Rossini's complex score. Zelmira is a work of considerable dramatic ambition—full of Rossini's characteristic melodic invention but with darker, more serious undertones than some of his earlier comedies. The music features intricate ensemble passages, beautiful arias, and orchestration that balances intimacy with grandeur. This recording preserves an important opera in excellent sound, with singers who understand both Rossini's technical demands and his emotional content.
