Emergency, the German collective, brought a sophisticated fusion of jazz musicianship and rock dynamics to their 1971 self-titled debut on CBS. Built around powerful horn arrangements and fluid guitar work, the music flows between bracing uptempo passages and introspective sections with real architectural grace. It's fusion music that doesn't sacrifice instrumental virtuosity for song structure. The band—featuring saxophonist Hans Koller and guitarist Volker Kriegel—created something that stood apart from both American and British counterparts.
