Harry Edison's trumpet and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis's tenor saxophone are a perfect match on these sessions. Edison played in the Count Basie tradition—economical, swinging, never playing a wasted note. Davis brings a muscular, hard-swinging approach and genuine blues feeling to everything he plays. They work through standards and blues changes with the kind of easy, confident swing that comes from years of playing together. The sessions have real warmth and humor; you can hear these musicians enjoying the music and each other's company. This is the post-war Basie school of swing at its best—straightforward, groove-oriented, and deeply swinging.
