Harnoncourt's interpretation of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony captures the conductor's restless intelligence applied to one of the Romantic era's most enigmatic masterworks. This 1998 recording with the Concertgebouworkest draws on the 1878/80 version, a score Bruckner himself revised multiple times, each iteration revealing different facets of his symphonic ambition. Where some conductors emphasize the work's hymnic grandeur, Harnoncourt illuminates its architecture—the searching string passages, the brass chorales that seem to question rather than assert, the way Bruckner builds cathedrals of sound from intimate gestures. The "Romantic" epithet promises lushness, but this symphony resists easy sentiment; it's more about spiritual struggle and architectural logic. Harnoncourt, who spent decades reconsidering the classical tradition, brings clarity and forward momentum without sacrificing the work's profound depths. For anyone curious about Bruckner beyond the popular Seventh and Ninth, this is an essential encounter.
