Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty from 1889 is one of the great ballet scores, and this complete Concertgebouw recording with Antal Dorati shows why it's endured. If you know the music at all, you probably know the Rose Adagio or some of the fairy tale themes—they're gorgeous, romantic melodies that stick with you. What's great about this version is how clear and unhurried it sounds, letting you hear all the orchestration details Tchaikovsky packed in. The strings are lush, the woodwinds are elegant, and there's real drama when the music calls for it. This 2011 recording is excellent if you want the complete ballet on two CDs without excessive interpretive fussing around. It's one of those works that's genuinely timeless—great for focused listening or as a soundtrack to your day. A wonderful introduction if you're getting into classical ballet music.
